Finding a job is hard... especially when you are an entry level, recent grad who has no idea what the next, or even first, step may be. I want to create a place where entry level advertisers from all around the world can go to gain some instant insight and advice about what it takes to find a job in advertising. The Story:
The idea came to me while I was sitting at a coffee shop in San Francisco. My own personal tragedies had left me at a crossroads. With the exception of some freelance gigs, my search for a full-time “dream job” had been fruitless. I began thinking about how I could turn a depressing challenge into an enlightening opportunity. I knew that I wanted to make an impact on the advertising world, I just didn’t know how I intended to do it. It then hit me in the face like an angry drag queen! I would use this time in limbo as a chance to explore the workings on landing a dream job in advertising.
I decided to give myself one month and four cities: Detroit, Chicago, Pittsburgh and NYC. In 30 days, I plan to spend a week in each city visiting a variety of advertising agencies and design studios, with the common goal of gaining insight to help answer my personal question of desperation, "how can I find a job?!" I will blog my findings, video what I can, and at the end of my journey analyze and organize the mass amounts of advice and insights I hope to come across. As a result, I hope to supply the entry level world with an extreme tool that will generate job finding results.
So with my shitty, outdated laptop, my i-Phone, digital camcorder, and a smile I embark on this journey that will help solve that question for so many entry levels like myself…
How the hell can I get a job?
Why Pittsburgh, Detroit, NYC and Chicago?
Despite the fact that I have connections in all four cities, I wanted to explore the two industry extremes to gain a well-rounded understanding of an entry level's place in this job-centered world. I want to understand how thriving cities and depressed, but growing, cities see the industry. What do you hope to gain from this project? I want to know the best possible way to find a job as an entry level advertising graduate. I hope that this site will give others hope and offer guidance that I wish I had when I graduated.
How can I help?
